Non-hormonal therapy

For some women, hormone therapy is not an option. But other prescription medications can be effective treatments for hot flashes. Studies have shown antidepressant agents are promising options for vasomotor symptoms. Venlafaxine is the first antidepressant drug to undergo clinical trials for the treatment of hot flashes, while paroxetine and fluoxetine—both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors—show signs of effectiveness as well.

Gabapentin is a pharmaceutical drug used to treat various neurological disorders. For some patients, it has been effective in reducing hot flashes. It is particularly effective for night sweats if taken before bed. Clonidine, an antihypertensive drug, is well known for its treatment of hot flashes, however certain side effects have been associated with its use—including dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness and constipation.
